What if I asked you to take a minute to really look at your life? No. Wait! Let me clarify. I don’t want you to look at the life you dream about or the life you had years ago. I’m talking about the life you’re living right now. Today. Oh yeah, and one other thing. You get to visualize and name what’s good in it first. Then, you can head to what’s a hot mess or what you’d like to change. Cool? Perfect. Let’s Go!
Let’s call this “surveying the landscape of your life.” Look at your life from a view of what’s rockin’ versus what’s not first. It’s way too easy to head to that negative space of “my life is boring” or “My life sucks so that’s why I’m going to do everything different going forward”. Go with me on this for a minute. I mean, since you’re ready to reclaim your crown and go get your life, it’s important to see where you already feel good, maybe even excited about what you’ve created. This is your starting place.
This is where you get to cheer your victories, throw yourself a mental (or real life!) Rockstar party, and show some gratitude towards the life you’re already living. Then, you can start to look at how to live more fully in the glorious space you’re already in, or take it to the next level, or transform it into something completely new. But first, you get to see what you’re working with and embrace it. You played a major role in creating the life you’re now living, regardless of if you’re giddy about it or not, so own it.
There’s this misconception that we have to turn our lives upside down and inside out in order to live our dreams. When, in fact, often we already have exactly what we want right in front of us, give or take a trip or two to Paris.
So, let’s explore that. When you took that look, what were some of the people, places, and things that popped to the top of your list? Grab a piece of paper, your journal, phone, or whatever works, and jot them down. Go all in. How do they currently enhance, add value to, and brighten your life. And, how, if we’re talking about people here, do you brighten their lives. Next, take a moment. Take a breath. Maybe even close your eyes. Imagine it being even better or fuller. What does it look like? See yourself and those you love and serve all lit up with it. What’s one thing you could do today to move closer to that imagined space? Make a note. Then, take action.
I’ve realized that joy expands. There’s no end. You can continue to blossom in it with everyone and with everything that you do in your life. But what about if we’re talking a complete transformation? What if when you took that look you were like “Time for a change!” Ok, that’s fair. I totally and completely get that! Been there. Transformed that. So, where do you start? Well, what’s the first thing that popped to the top of your mind, when you began to think about your life. Whatever that is, that’s your starting place. That’s the beginning of your reinvention, transformation, your brighter life. Write it down. Call it out. Decide that, instead of a long list of “Everything I Want To Change In My life,” you’ll get at that one thing. You’ll commit to that thing. You’ll take one small step. Or, maybe you’re ready to take a leap. Go for it. Either way, you’ll be going in the direction of your dreams.
You’re the master of your life’s landscape. The good news is that it’s up to you to choose if you want to water the grass you’ve already planted and put in a few new flowers, or if you need to build a whole new house. And if you’re going realize all of your goals and dreams, first you’ve got to stop, breathe, be grateful for how far you’ve come and for what you have, get clear on where you are and where you’re going, and of course, take action.
It’s all available to you. And as the Rumi quote reminds us “What you seek is seeking you.” So, stay wide open and believe that whatever it is that you’re looking to expand or create in your life is on the way.
